What will change from 2026?
From January 1, 2026, a new legal requirement will apply in Italy: payment terminals (POS) and cash registers must be connected to each other. On October 31, 2025, the Italian tax authority (Agenzia delle Entrate) published the technical specifications governing implementation.
Why this change?
The aim of the new regulation is to increase the transparency and traceability of payments and to simplify compliance with tax obligations for merchants. Every transaction should automatically correspond to the relevant fiscal document.
How does the connection work?
The good news is that no new hardware setup is required. The link can be established in just a few steps via the “Fatture e Corrispettivi” portal. Retailers can logically connect their POS terminals to their cash registers there. Changes—such as new devices—must be added within specified time limits.
What happens if you don’t comply?
Those who fail to establish the connection in time risk penalties of between €1,000 and €4,000, as well as operational problems with document transmission.
